If sex is itself a taboo in the Indian society, then you can
imagine what kind of reaction would homosexuality garner. While most of the
Bollywood directors decide to go the romantic way and make stereotype movies,
many like to break rules. Bollywood movies on lesbian theme is something that
was not exploited much on the silver screen. If films are based on
homosexuality it only draws a lot of criticsm and is ultimately banished as
“too bold”. But despite the hardship some film makers seem determined to make
movies on this sensitive issue and succeed too. So here’s a look at the top 5
Bollywood movies on lesbian theme!
FIRE
When two legends like Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das come
together you cannot expect anything less than a masterpiece but you wouldn’t
have expected a film where they would be lesbians and that too way back in
1996. Fire is a beautiful story of two women who are married to two brothers of
the same house who neglect them. So the two ladies end up having a relationship
with each other, thus exploring their sexuality. Needless to say both Shabana
Azmi and Nandita Das did an exceptional job in the film. But perhaps the timing
was not right as many people were not ready for such a bold film back then.
GIRLFRIEND
When Amrita Arora and Isha Koppikar’s film Girlfriend
released in 2004, it got embroiled in many controversies for obvious reasons.
The poster itself was too much for many to handle! The movie explored the theme
of alternate sexuality where the two women protagonist end up having feelings
for each other. The film didn’t fare well at the BO and both the actors were
flaked for doing such a film.
HEROINE
The film explored the theme of lesbianism in a subtle
manner. It is about a heroine who has trouble with her personal life. Kareena
Kapoor is in love with the much married Arjun Rampal in the film that paves way
for a lot of trouble and tension. To ease her tension, Kareena spends time with
one of her only friends Shahana. They have a great time, after a while Shahana
leads Bebo to the bedroom, a scene that implies the two had a one night stand.
DEDH ISHQIYA
No one expected this film to explore the theme of
homosexuality in their wildest dreams! In this brilliant film the two female
protagonists played by Madhuri and Huma have a secret love affair. Their love
for each other is kept a secret and is revealed much later. The homosexuality
is subtle but obvious. The film is a pure delight to watch, especially when we
are under the false impression that the love story is between Arshad-Huma and
Madhuri and Naseeruddin.
RAGINI MMS 2
The film is a sequel to Ragini MMS that was about a
scandalous MMS going viral. The sequel stars Sunny Leone in the lead role. Well
of what the story is based on, it doesn’t look like it is based on lesbianism,
but we have got our hands on an exclusive picture where Sunny Leone and Sandhya
Mridul are seen doing a Lip-lock! We can tell you what exactly this scene is
about only after the release of the film.
